What is a Koinobori?

Koinobori – The Japanese wind fish and their timeless symbolism

When the wind makes them dance, they appear like living beings in the sky: Koinobori , the Japanese carp windsocks, are far more than a decorative element—they carry centuries of tradition, hope, and family history. Originally hoisted for Japanese Children's Day (Kodomo no Hi) in May, they are now popular around the world as a symbol of joie de vivre, resilience, and family solidarity.

What are Koinobori?

Koinobori (鯉のぼり) literally means "rising carp." This textile wind vane depicts a stylized koi – the strong, colorful fish that in Japan represents endurance, courage, and success. In mythology, a koi swims against a strong current and transforms into a dragon – a symbol of overcoming obstacles and personal growth.

Traditionally, every family in Japan hangs koinobori from bamboo poles or house facades on May 5th. Each flag symbolizes a family member: the largest carp represents the father, a slightly smaller one represents the mother, and below them are smaller koinobori for the children. Today, these rules are often relaxed—what remains is the message: May the child grow up strong, happy, and free like a koi.

From tradition to design object

Modern koinobori have been experiencing a renaissance in recent years – and not only in Japan. Whether as a cheerful eye-catcher in a child's room, stylish decoration in the living area, or airy companion in the garden: these floating mythical creatures delight with their colors, patterns, and movement in the wind.

Designers around the world have also recognized the potential of koinobori, creating new versions that combine traditional symbolism with contemporary aesthetics. Koinobori are now available in soft pastel shades, with floral patterns, or in a retro 1970s style.
