Here the wooden comb Duafe, the Adinkra symbol for beauty and femininity from West Africa, is woven into a cotton blanket. Adinkra symbols have been used in the visual arts of Africa since the 12th century. The Chintemani circles incorporated into the pattern represent strength and courage in Turkish decorative arts. Their roots lie in Asia, where they symbolize the three virtues of the Buddha.
