What does mulesing-free wool mean?
What is non-mulesed wool – and why is it so important to us at Nauli & Stories?
Wool is one of the oldest and most valuable natural materials in the world: breathable, temperature-regulating, biodegradable, and cuddly soft. But not all wool products are the same – because, unfortunately, wool production does not always go hand in hand with animal welfare. A term that appears increasingly often in this context is mulesing. But what does that actually mean? And why do we at Nauli & Stories place such great value on non-mulesed wool?
What is mulesing?
Mulesing is a practice that is widespread primarily in Australia – the world's largest exporter of merino wool. To prevent flystrike (myiasis), a strip of skin around the anal area is removed from lambs without anesthesia. This open wound is intended to prevent moisture and dirt from collecting there – a supposed protection against parasites, which, however, entails great pain and stress for the animals.
Many consumers know nothing about this practice – yet it affects a large portion of the conventional merino wool on the global market.
What does "non-mulesed" mean?
Non-mulesed wool comes from sheep that have not been mutilated in this way. Instead, responsible breeders rely on alternative, animal-friendly methods such as targeted breeding lines, good hygiene conditions, and regular shearing. This animal-appropriate husbandry is more labor-intensive – but it respects animal welfare and is the only acceptable basis for our wool products for us.
Our conscious decision for non-mulesed wool fashion
At Nauli & Stories, we are not just about beautiful design. We want to offer products that feel good all around – for you and for the world we live in. That is why we work exclusively with brands that take their responsibility seriously and rely on non-mulesed wool.
Two of our favorites in the category non-mulesed wool fashion and home accessories:
ERIBÉ Knitwear (Scotland)
The label ERIBÉ combines traditional Fair Isle patterns with modern colors and cuts. The merino wool comes from farms that completely abstain from mulesing. Production takes place in Scotland and other parts of Europe – under fair conditions and with great craftsmanship. The knitwear from ERIBÉ is cuddly soft and combines traditional patterns with modern colors.
Mantas Ezcaray (Spain)
The weaving mill Mantas Ezcaray has been producing high-quality blankets and scarves from pure natural wool in northern Spain since 1930. Only non-mulesed wool is used for their luxurious textiles – often from small European farms. The pieces are masterfully crafted and offer timeless beauty that brings joy for a long time.
Non-mulesed wool: A small difference with a big impact
When you choose non-mulesed wool fashion and blankets, you are making a conscious choice – for animal welfare, transparency, and a better future. As retailers, it is our responsibility to look closely at where our products come from. At Nauli & Stories, we do this with full conviction.
We believe: True quality is created where responsibility and aesthetics go hand in hand.
